Foundation Raises Funds and Honors Citizen for Distinguished ServicePort Angeles, Wash - Port Angeles Education Foundation (PAEF) members and guests celebrated public education at the 26th Annual Celebrate Education Dinner fundraiser on Friday, May 12 at the Red Lion Hotel.

The event raised approximately $33,000 through its table sponsorships, ticket sales, and donations from those who couldn’t attend the event.  The “Pass the Hat for Kids” fundraiser raised $14,545, which is included in the total, for the PAEF Teacher Grant Program.

Entertainment was provided by Port Angeles High School Vocal Unlimited under the direction of Jolene Dalton Gailey.

Guests enjoyed an evening with guest speaker State Representative Mike Chapman and Roosevelt Elementary students who are studying governance and law.

The Distinguished Service Person of the Year award was presented to Anne Todnem during the evening.

“Shortly after moving to Port Angeles,” Chris Riffle, PAEF president, said, “Anne made connections with the schools in town, working on and off, as needed, throughout most of the district’s schools, helping in kindergarten and reading classrooms, music classes, providing accompaniment for student musicians.”

“After her husband Willard’s death in 1998,” Riffle continued, “Anne concentrated her volunteer service at the high school, working five days a week in the main office and attendance office.  Her help was invaluable to the office staff, as Anne assisted with their many duties including the important but not so glamorous task of filing and maintaining student records.  It’s hard to believe, but Anne spent 17 years as a volunteer in the high school office, working five days a week for most of those years.”

“We are especially pleased and grateful that we are able to recognize Anne for her years of dedication and service before her 100th birthday!” added Riffle.

The Celebrate Education event was sponsored by Dr. Joe Corn and Maureen Sandison, Dr. Larry and Jacki Gordon, Dr. Lynn Bedford, Dr. Mary Ann & Gene Unger, Dr. Roger and Maura Oakes, Nola and Kris Grier, Dr. Elizabeth and David Christian, Leslie Spotkov, Annette T.
