PASD Secures State Mediator for Negotiations with Para Educators
Posted on 11/09/2018

A state mediator has been engaged to assist in negotiations between the Port Angeles School District and the Port Angeles Para Educators’ Association (PAPEA).

A mediator was obtained through the Public Employment Relations Commission (PERC), a state agency with jurisdiction over public sector labor relations and collective bargaining in Washington. In mediation, an impartial mediator helps those in conflict define issues, explore solutions and reach mutual agreement.

At the last negotiations session on October 30, the District had offered PAPEA a 3.5% pay increase, and the association countered with 22%. On November 6, para educators voted to authorize a strike to begin Thursday, November 15, 2018.

The District is dedicated to providing our students with a quality educational experience. We recognize that a strike would be disruptive to our District’s staff, students, school families and the community at large. For this reason, the District worked diligently to secure a mediator quickly and remains dedicated to resolving the issue in order to avoid a strike.

The mediator will be in Port Angeles on Tuesday, November 13 at 1 p.m., and again on Wednesday, November 14 as needed.
