Tanabu High School Students from Mutsu City, Japan visit Port AngelesTanabu High School students arrived in Port Angeles on Thursday, October 5.  Over the weekend, the group spent a day sightseeing in Victoria, B.C. and visited the local Crab Festival.
Monday, October 9, during their final day in Port Angeles, Tanabu High School students, after touring the high school campus, walked to nearby Jefferson Elementary. In the classrooms they visited, they demonstrated for the young students how to write in Japanese script, and provided instruction in simple Origami before posing for a group photo in front of the school.  “This is a time where our third and fourth grade pen pals get to finally meet face to face while learning more about each other’s culture,” explained Melissa Lisk, third grade teacher at Jefferson Elementary.
The Japanese visitors concluded their time in Port Angeles with lunch back at Port Angeles High School cafeteria before boarding a bus to return to Seattle for the journey back to Mutsu City.
Thanks to our host families for allowing Tanabu visitors the opportunity to experience the life of an American Family.  Port Angeles has enjoyed the benefits of a cultural exchange with the Mutsu City community for over 22 years.
