Hamilton Elementary School to receive the Whole Child Award from Washington State ASCDOlympia, WA – The Washington State Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (WSASCD) has announced that Hamilton Elementary School will receive the 2017 Whole Child Award. The Whole Child School Award is intended to acknowledge and honor a school that has made significant contributions to student learning by creating a school culture with programs that exemplify one or more of the five tenets of The Whole Child Initiative: Healthy, Safe, Engaged, Supported, and Challenged; as well as serve as models for all educators across the state.

Hamilton Elementary has demonstrated consistent growth and progress in supporting The Whole Child within their school and community. Each year students, staff and parents complete a Center for Education Effectiveness (CEE) survey. The surveys focus on the characteristics of high performing schools. According to the most recent survey, trend data indicates there has been significant growth in all ten areas over the past 5 years. The most significant growth is in: High Levels of Collaboration and Communication (42%-94%), Focused Professional Development (36%-83%), and Frequent Monitoring of Teaching and Learning (43%-85%). Data indicates five areas above 90%: Staff Willingness to Change (100%), Supportive Learning Environment (97%), High Levels of Collaboration and Communication (94%), High Standards and Expectations (93%) and Effective Leadership (91%).

At Hamilton students feel safe, valued, respected and cared for. They are challenged, engaged, and motivated to learn. They have created a school climate that focuses on a theme of, “Hawk Heroes Help Themselves and Other to Learn.” The corresponding behavior expectations are: Be Respectful, Be Responsible, Be Safe and Be More Awesome! High CEE scores, high expectations, and above state average academic scores reflect what Hamilton Elementary proudly refers to as “The Hamilton Way.” Hamilton Elementary exemplifies a school that supports The Whole Child, ensuring each student is healthy, safe, engaged, supported and challenged.

Founded in 1956, the Washington State Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD) is a community of all educators committed to promoting promising practices to ensure ALL students are safe, healthy, engaged, supported and challenged.
