2018-19 School Year Calendar Option for Make-Up DaysSuperintendent Marty Brewer had a discussion with Board Directors during the February 28 school board meeting about making up snow days in the 2018-19 school year.

“We had previously altered the school calendar to extend the last day of school to June 18, a half day,” said Superintendent Brewer.  “Now we have five snow days to make up.”

For the Board’s consideration, Superintendent Brewer reviewed the following:

First, not to decide too soon, but wait until mid-March to make sure there aren’t any more snow days.

Second, add June 19, 20 and 21 as school days to the school calendar.

Third, request a waiver from the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) for June 24 and 25.

This means that June 21 would become the last day of school and it would be a half day.

With this proposal, and if OSPI approves the waiver request, we could keep graduation on June 14 for Port Angeles High School and June 17 for Lincoln High School.

Superintendent Brewer stated, “I want to go on record as saying that we are going to do whatever it takes to keep Port Angeles High School’s graduation ceremony on June 14.  This is for the good of our students and our community.”

“This plan is contingent upon the waiver being approved.  There are no guarantees that OSPI will approve, even though a State of Emergency was declared,” said Superintendent Brewer.

The Hourly requirement for instruction (1,027 hours) will be met and even exceeded with this plan/recommendation.

“Our employees still have to work the number of days as prescribed by their contract, but we will work out how to do that by bargaining group,” said Superintendent Brewer.
