Collective Bargaining Agreement Updates

PASD Schools Closure on Thursday, November 15, 2018

Bargaining Handshake

We are sorry for the need to inform you that despite lengthy negotiations we have been unable as of yet to reach an agreement between the Port Angeles School District (PASD) and the Port Angeles Para Educators’ Association (PAPEA).  Our teachers, represented by Port Angeles Education Association (PAEA), have voted to not cross the line if para educators strike.

Given the uncertainty if an agreement is forthcoming today, and the need to let students and families know to make alternate plans, Port Angeles Schools are not opening schools tomorrow, Thursday, November 15, 2018.  In addition, families should expect a daily update with the status of school for the next day.

Middle and high school athletics are continuing as the coaches are covered under a separate contract.  PAHS Drama performances of Little Shop of Horrors are still on. PAHS Band will still participate in the November 17 North Shore PAC Band Festival. The 'Y' after school program will still take place at Hamilton.  Meals will be served at the Lower Elwha Center and the 'Y', as well as the Boys & Girls Club.

As of tomorrow morning, all school buildings will be closed to the public as well as to any staff not in paid status or scheduled to work. The District’s Central Services Building will continue to be open and operate on a normal schedule.

We recognize that a strike is disruptive to our District’s staff, students, school families and the community at large, and we apologize.  This has been an especially challenging year for negotiations across the state with the McCleary decision and figuring out how the new state funding formula works in each district.

There is every confidence we will work through this issue.  Be assured our students will receive a full 180-days of instruction. Every employee in the Port Angeles School District plays a part in providing a quality educational experience for our students.

For updates on collective bargaining, please consult the District’s website at www.portangelesschools.org. Do you have questions? Please contact us at info@portangelesschools.org . A recorded message with updates is available at 360.565.3703.
