Substitute Teaching Shortage

During the first month of the school year, the Port Angeles School District demonstrated the ability to navigate the COVID landscape and keep our schools open successfully. Our most significant concern right now is a substitute teacher shortage. We are at a critical moment in our school year. Our District is taking every step to ensure there’s an adult in the classroom when teachers are absent, resorting to using other staff like principals, District administrators, and other staff who have other essential responsibilities during the typical school day. If we cannot fill our vacant substitute teaching positions, canceling classes or classrooms would be the worst-case scenario. The Port Angeles School District has no desire to do this, but we may have no other option if we cannot hire additional staff.

We are looking for 10-20 interested individuals to step up and help out our students. If you or someone you know is interested in becoming a substitute teacher, please fill out the attached application or pick one up at the District Office (905 W 9th St, Port Angeles, WA 98363). Please get in touch with me to set up an appointment, and we will walk you through the steps to become a sub. At this time, we can reimburse application fees and waive the costs associated with fingerprinting and background checks. As of October 18th, we will increase the daily pay for substitutes to $150 per day. We are streamlining the application process to get substitutes in the classroom quickly. Time is of the essence.

Thank you to those who stepped up and applied to be substitute bus drivers and school nurses. We are in the process of training a few new hires, and this should help immensely. This year has been a series of new obstacles. We will get through this together because of our fantastic community, and we appreciate your consideration in applying and helping spread the word.
